Rising Sun Shine and a Smiley Face on a Backend Designer's computer screen are analogous in terms of their beauty. Why? Ask any Physical Design engineer who had just came out of a tapeout phase. Well, as before the dawn there is always darkness, every engineer in the Physical Design world also have dark days. It might seem to you as a reader, looking at all the quotes that i started off with, that PD(here by i will use PD as short form for Physical Design) engineer undergoes all the nerve wrecking tensions and troubles by themselves.
If you think so, then you just know half of the story. Yes, everyone knows that trees bear all the burden by giving us fruit. But we really forget about the small insect which has really helped to kick start the process of fruit formation. Only because it is collecting food for its future?? But the tree is also doing the same?? If you are in PD world, you might have caught the drift already, and Yes i'm comparing PD engineer with tree and the supporting Application Engineer is non other than the puny gnat.
Everyone have a notion that Application Engineer's(AEs) job is the most easiest to handle in PD world. But that is not entirely true. Yes, AE job is a cool job when compared to designers, but then its just a sugar coat on a dirty secret that only AE knew inside his heart. That is, people to whom he is supporting and helping, seldom respect him for what he is. Like the insect which is lost in oblivion, and in the flood of praises to the tree, he/she(AE) is also forgot like that insect.
But dont worry the story is not done yet. There are few who appreciate the work done by the AE during their tapeouts, who by knowingly or unknowingly are getting the undivided attention, as a gratitude for Being Human. These blissful moments of appreciation and the moments of traumatic self-consciousness in AE life, is only making the puny gnat of PD world stronger, career wise and extra-talents wise. Like the bee which enjoys its nectar collection, as the time passes by the gnat of PD world will win his recognition.
